Gyokuro Tea

Gyokuro Tea: Japan’s Most Luxurious Shade-Grown Green Tea

Gyokuro tea (thé gyokuro) is one of the most premium Japanese green teas (thés verts japonais de luxe), known for its sweet umami flavor (saveur umami douce), high L-theanine content (riche en L-théanine), and smooth caffeine boost (énergie naturelle équilibrée). Often called the “jade dew” tea (thé de rosée de jade), gyokuro is shade-grown for weeks before harvest, enhancing its chlorophyll (chlorophylle) and amino acid content (acides aminés).

Although Genuine Tea does not currently offer Gyokuro, we believe in educating tea lovers (éduquer les amateurs de thé) about its unique qualities and why it remains a prized part of Japanese tea culture (culture du thé japonais).

What Is Gyokuro Tea? (Qu’est-ce que le Thé Gyokuro ?)

Gyokuro is a high-grade shade-grown green tea (thé vert d’ombre haut de gamme) from Japan. Unlike sencha, which grows in full sunlight, gyokuro is covered for 3-4 weeks before harvest (cultivé à l’ombre pendant 3-4 semaines). This shading process increases its levels of:

L-theanine (L-théanine) – Enhances focus and promotes a calming effect.
Chlorophyll (Chlorophylle) – Gives gyokuro its vibrant green color (couleur verte éclatante) and detoxifying properties.
Amino acids (Acides aminés) – Contribute to its sweet, umami-rich taste (saveur douce et umami).

Once harvested, the tea leaves are steamed (cuites à la vapeur), rolled, and dried to preserve their fresh flavor (saveur fraîche).

Gyokuro vs. Other Japanese Green Teas (Gyokuro vs. Autres Thés Verts Japonais)

Tea Type (Type de Thé) Growing Method (Méthode de Culture) Flavor (Saveur) Caffeine (Caféine)
Gyokuro Shade-grown for 3-4 weeks (Cultivé à l’ombre 3-4 semaines) Sweet, umami-rich (Doux, umami intense) 50-75 mg per cup
Sencha Grown in full sun (Cultivé en plein soleil) Fresh, slightly grassy (Frais, légèrement herbacé) 30-50 mg per cup
Matcha Shade-grown, stone-ground (Cultivé à l’ombre, broyé à la pierre) Bold, creamy, vegetal (Intense, crémeux, végétal) 60-70 mg per serving
Hojicha Roasted (Torréfié) Toasty, caramelized (Grillé, caramélisé) 10-20 mg per cup

Gyokuro is sweeter and richer in umami (plus sucré et riche en umami) than sencha due to its higher L-theanine levels. While matcha is also shade-grown, gyokuro is enjoyed as whole tea leaves (feuilles entières infusées) rather than a powder.

Health Benefits of Gyokuro Tea (Bienfaits du Thé Gyokuro)

Like all Japanese green teas (thés verts japonais), gyokuro is packed with health-boosting properties (propriétés bénéfiques pour la santé):

1. Enhances Focus & Mental Clarity (Améliore la Concentration et la Clarté Mentale)

  • High in L-theanine (riche en L-théanine), which promotes a state of calm focus (concentration apaisante).
  • Ideal for work, studying, and meditation (idéal pour le travail, les études et la méditation).

2. Provides a Gentle, Sustained Energy Boost (Énergie Douce et Durable)

  • Contains 50-75 mg of natural caffeine (caféine naturelle) per cup.
  • The combination of caffeine and L-theanine prevents energy crashes (évite les chutes d’énergie).

3. Rich in Antioxidants & Supports Immunity (Riche en Antioxydants et Soutient l’Immunité)

  • Contains catechins (catéchines) and EGCG (épigallocatéchine gallate), which help:
Strengthen the immune system (renforcer le système immunitaire).
    Reduce inflammation (réduire l’inflammation).
Protect against free radicals (protéger contre les radicaux libres).

4. Supports Detoxification & Digestion (Détoxification et Digestion)

  • High chlorophyll levels (teneur élevée en chlorophylle) help remove toxins (éliminer les toxines).
  • Aids digestion and promotes gut health (santé intestinale).

How to Brew Gyokuro Tea (Comment Infuser le Thé Gyokuro ?)

To fully appreciate gyokuro’s delicate flavors (saveurs délicates), follow these traditional brewing techniques:

Use Lower Water Temperature (Utiliser une Eau Moins Chaude) – Brew at 140-160°F (60-70°C) to preserve sweetness and umami.

Longer Steeping Time (Infusion Plus Longue) – Unlike sencha, gyokuro requires 2-3 minutes (2-3 minutes d’infusion).

More Tea Leaves (Plus de Feuilles de Thé) – Use 1.5 teaspoons per 8 oz cup (1,5 c. à thé par 250 ml) for a rich taste.

Smaller Cups for Slow Sipping (Petites Tasses pour une Dégustation Lente) – Enjoy in small sips to fully appreciate the umami depth (apprécier toute la profondeur umami).

Why Gyokuro Is a Premium Tea (Pourquoi le Gyokuro est un Thé de Luxe ?)

Labor-intensive cultivation (culture nécessitant beaucoup de travail) – Requires shade-growing, hand-picking, and careful processing.
Superior taste & smoothness (saveur supérieure et douceur intense) – Naturally sweet, umami-rich, and less astringent than sencha.
Higher levels of L-theanine (teneur plus élevée en L-théanine) – More calming and mentally stimulating (stimulant pour l’esprit) than regular green tea.

Although Genuine Tea does not currently offer gyokuro, we encourage you to explore other premium Japanese green teas like our Kato Matcha Organic Spring Harvest for a similar smooth umami experience (expérience umami veloutée).

Final Thoughts: Is Gyokuro Worth Trying? (Le Gyokuro Vaut-il la Peine d’Être Essayé ?)

If you love high-quality Japanese green tea (thé vert japonais de qualité supérieure) and want a sweet, umami-rich, smooth flavor (saveur douce, umami et veloutée), then gyokuro is a must-try (un incontournable).

Even though Genuine Tea doesn’t offer gyokuro, you can still experience the depth of Japanese green tea (profondeur du thé vert japonais) with our Kato Matcha Organic Spring Harvest—a premium, shade-grown matcha with a similar umami complexity (complexité umami similaire). 🍵✨
